The oldest boxing gym in the United States is 88
Gleason's Gym opened in New York in 1937. It moved three times — from the Bronx to Manhattan and then to Brooklyn — without ever closing, and remains the oldest working boxing gym in the country. More than 130 world champions have prepared fights there, from Jake LaMotta to Muhammad Ali to Mike Tyson.
The gym carries a motto borrowed from Virgil, about those with no glory seeking to win it by arms. Neon signs of this kind, hung above the door or behind the counter, have been part of the furniture in those gyms since the 1940s. That is what this canvas reproduces.
What you see
Portrait format, dark brick ground in light relief. At the centre, a pair of gloves drawn in red neon tube, cuffs up, hung from a hook and a loop in yellow neon. Below, the text on two lines: boxing in glowing white capitals, then club in smaller yellow letters.
A diffuse halo surrounds each line and reflects off the bricks. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a lit sign; from 1 m / 3 ft you see that the light is painted, not real.

Worth knowing: no face and no champion — this is the canvas that sets a gym atmosphere without putting a person on the wall. In a converted garage, a basement or a home gym it works as a sign at the entrance. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A sign is read from a distance
The glowing lines and the two words carry the canvas from 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in upwards, which makes it one of the few pieces here that holds above a door or in an alcove. The grain of the bricks and the halo around each tube need 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
Does the neon on this canvas light up?
No. The glow is printed, not lit: there is no tube, no wiring and no power supply. The effect comes from a double outline and a halo worked into the artwork. For a wired sign, see the boxing neon signs.
What is the oldest boxing gym still open?
Gleason's Gym, opened in New York in 1937 and moved three times without ever closing. More than 130 world champions have trained there.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is this canvas suitable for a home gym?
It is the piece designed for it: a gym sign with no champion on it, readable from 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in, that works at the entrance of a converted garage or basement.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
