A nickname that comes from the colour of his hair
Canelo means cinnamon in Spanish. It is the nickname Saúl Álvarez was given as a child in Guadalajara, for his red hair — a rare trait in Mexico, inherited from his family. It became his ring name and, later, a brand.
He traditionally fights on the weekends of 5 May and 16 September, two dates in Mexican national memory, a slot Mexican boxing has claimed for decades and one that guarantees a huge audience on both sides of the border. He turned professional at fifteen, one of the youngest starts of any future undisputed champion.
What you see
Portrait format, high contrast black and white photograph. The boxer stands in a ring corner, framed full length, bare chested, arms at his sides, gloves brought in front of the thighs, trunks with a pale wide waistband carrying his sponsors' names, and a knee support on the left leg.
The ring ropes cross the background and a light shines from above. In the lower third, the name Canelo runs across the image in massive red capitals, followed by Saúl Álvarez in finer red letters — the only colour in the composition. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a red word on black and white; from 1 m / 3 ft the detail of the ring appears.

Worth knowing: black and white competes with no wall colour, and the red of the name is enough to catch the eye: this is the easier of the two versions to place in a room that is already decorated. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A red name that carries from a distance
The red capitals run the full width, so the canvas stays legible at five metres even at small sizes. It is the second line under the name and the detail of the ring that need surface — allow 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in for them to read from a sofa. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Saúl Álvarez nicknamed Canelo?
Canelo means cinnamon in Spanish. He was given the nickname as a child in Guadalajara for his red hair, rare in Mexico and inherited from his family. It became his ring name and then a brand.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is this canvas entirely black and white?
The photograph is. Red appears only in the lettering: the name in massive capitals and the finer line beneath it. That is the whole of the colour in the composition.
When does Canelo Álvarez traditionally fight?
On the weekends of 5 May and 16 September, two dates in Mexican national memory. The slot has belonged to Mexican boxing for decades and draws audiences on both sides of the border.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
