On 5 March 2011 in Anaheim, Saúl Alvarez beat Matthew Hatton on points for the WBC light middleweight title. He was twenty years and seven months old — the youngest Mexican world champion in a long while, and the start of a run that would take him through four weight classes.
The nickname comes from his hair: canelo means cinnamon in Mexican Spanish, and it is what the neighbourhood called him long before the belts.
The monogram, near and far
The motif is printed rather than embroidered: that is what allows the three colours of the flag and the eagle from the coat of arms to sit inside two letters. The CA monogram takes the top of the mark, with Canelo in gothic script directly beneath. At three metres you read a coloured shape; at one metre the eagle and the name come through.
Cut and adjustment
Flat brim delivered unbent, structured 13 cm / 5.1 in crown, rear snapback closure. This model covers 57–60 cm / 22.4–23.6 in. The measuring method sits on the Everlast snapback listing.

The three flag colours and the eagle fit inside two letters about 4 cm / 1.6 in tall: the mark stays readable without running the panel from seam to seam, which makes it wearable with a piece that already carries a print.
Worth a look
The Canelo CA logo cap keeps the flat brim with a far larger monogram. The Canelo crown cap and the Canelo washed cap move to a curved peak. Everything sits in the boxing caps collection.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Saúl Alvarez called Canelo?
Canelo means cinnamon in Mexican Spanish and is used informally for a redhead. The nickname came from his hair, long before the professional career he began at fifteen.
What size cap should I get?
This model covers 57–60 cm / 22.4–23.6 in through the snap closure. Measure with a tape about 1 cm / 0.4 in above the eyebrows, around the back of the skull over the bump, without pulling tight.
How old was Canelo when he became world champion?
Twenty, on 5 March 2011, beating Matthew Hatton on points for the WBC light middleweight title. He went on to hold world titles in four weight classes.
Printed or embroidered — what is the difference?
Printing lies flat and allows gradients, photographs and fine detail such as a flag inside a small mark. Embroidery builds relief in thread, more resistant to washing but limited in the number of colours. This one is printed.
What is the bird inside the monogram?
The golden eagle from the Mexican coat of arms, perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak — the founding scene of Tenochtitlan as the Aztec codices tell it. It sits at the centre of the national flag.
