The thumbs up never meant that in Rome
Everyone thinks they know that a Roman emperor raised his thumb to spare a gladiator and lowered it to condemn him. That reading is not ancient: it comes from an 1872 painting, Pollice Verso, by the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, showing a crowd with thumbs down calling for the kill.
Latin sources do mention pollice verso, a « turned thumb », but never say which way — and several scholars argue the raised thumb meant the opposite. The painting settled the image for good.
On this hoodie the gesture is used in its modern sense: approval, with a finger pointing at the person wearing it.
