The Louisville bicycle
At 12, in 1954, Cassius Clay had his red bicycle stolen outside a community centre in Louisville. Furious, he went to find the policeman on duty, Joe Martin, and announced he was going to whip whoever took it. Martin, who trained boxers in the basement of the building, told him he had better learn to fight first.
Six years later he was Olympic champion in Rome. In 1964 he beat Sonny Liston, took the world heavyweight title, joined the Nation of Islam and dropped the name Cassius Clay for Muhammad Ali.
The artwork
ALI in three wide capitals with fine serifs fills the whole width of the print. MUHAMMAD runs in very small spaced type under the first letter, as a counterpoint. A pair of gloves hangs by its laces to the right of the lettering, level with the I, as if on a nail.
The A is reduced to a triangle with no crossbar. The print is monochrome — gold on dark colours, black on light ones. Plain back.
The garment
Lined hood with a drawcord, kangaroo pocket, ribbed cuffs and hem. Straight cut, set-in long sleeves.

Frequently asked questions
How did Muhammad Ali start boxing?
His red bicycle was stolen in Louisville in 1954, when he was 12. He reported it to policeman Joe Martin, who trained boxers in the basement and told him to learn to fight first. Six years later he was Olympic champion.
Why did Muhammad Ali change his name?
After beating Sonny Liston in 1964 he announced he had joined the Nation of Islam and dropped Cassius Clay, the name he called a slave name, for Muhammad Ali.
Is the print gold on every colour?
No. It is gold on the dark colours and black on the light ones, so the lettering stays readable on all ten.
How many colours are there?
Ten: black, white, red, yellow, pink, burgundy, navy, green, light grey and dark grey, all at the same price.
What size should I take?
European cut — take your usual size, with no Asian sizing to convert. Six sizes from S to XXXL, all at the same price. Over training kit, go up one.
How do I care for the print?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F inside out, no tumble dryer, and never run an iron over the print. Heat transfer film holds for years on that routine and gives way to heat, not to washing.
