On 6 March 1964, days after taking the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston, the champion announced that he was no longer Cassius Clay: Elijah Muhammad had just given him the name Muhammad Ali. That is the name printed on this mat, in the spelling that appeared on his fight posters.
What is printed
The name MUHAMMAD ALI in capitals, ALI in heavy white letters below MUHAMMAD in red, the whole block crossed by a horizontal red band. No portrait: the name alone carries the design, in a poster typeface.

He joined the Nation of Islam and was given the name Muhammad Ali by Elijah Muhammad on 6 March 1964, days after beating Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title. He used it for the rest of his career.
What was the rope-a-dope?
The tactic Ali used against George Foreman in Kinshasa on 30 October 1974: leaning back on the ropes, covering up and letting his opponent punch himself out before countering. Ali won in the eighth round and the term entered the language of boxing.
