Thirty-seven wins, then Tokyo
On 11 February 1990, at the Tokyo Dome, Tyson defended his title against James Buster Douglas. He was unbeaten in 37 fights and had been undisputed champion for two and a half years. Las Vegas books had Douglas at 42 to 1 against, the longest price ever posted on a heavyweight title fight.
Douglas took an uppercut in the eighth, got up, and put Tyson on the floor in the tenth. It was the first defeat of his career and the end of the stretch Americans call prime Tyson: forty months, from the title in November 1986 to that morning. This canvas belongs to that period.
What you see
Portrait format, textured grey ground reading as concrete. The boxer is framed from the hips up, face on, arms at his sides, bare chested, dark trunks with a wide waistband carrying triangle motifs, in high contrast black and white.
Either side of the body, both gloves are redrawn as red neon double outlines with turquoise wrists, hanging at hip height. The layout is symmetrical. From 3 m / 10 ft you read two red marks framing a figure; from 1 m / 3 ft the face and the trunk motifs come through.

Worth knowing: the layout is symmetrical, so it asks to be centred on its stretch of wall. It is also the most legible of the three Tyson neon canvases from a distance, because the two red areas sit apart from each other. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A symmetrical layout wants to be centred
The two lit gloves sit at equal distance from the axis, which means the canvas shows an off-centre hang immediately. Measure the wall, put the centre of the canvas 145 cm / 57 in from the floor, and keep at least 15 cm / 6 in of bare wall on each side. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
Does the neon on this canvas light up?
No. The glow is printed, not lit: there is no tube, no wiring and no power supply. The effect comes from a double outline and a halo worked into the artwork, which is why it reads as neon from a distance and as ink up close. If you want a wired sign, that is a different product family — see the boxing neon signs.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
When did Mike Tyson lose for the first time?
On 11 February 1990 in Tokyo, to James Buster Douglas, in the tenth round. He had won his first 37 fights, and Douglas had been priced at 42 to 1 against — still the longest odds posted on a heavyweight title fight.
How is this different from the other Tyson neon canvases?
The crop, not the colour: all three use the same red with turquoise wrists. This one is framed from the hips up with two gloves set apart, symmetrically; the profile version has a single lit glove, and the full length version shows the whole standing figure.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
