What the three letters cover today
The Ultimate Fighting Championship held its first event on 12 November 1993 in Denver, with no weight classes and almost no rules. At the time eight American states banned the discipline outright.
The turn came in 2001, when the promotion was bought and adopted the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts: weight classes, timed rounds, a listed set of illegal strikes, medical supervision. That rule set is what made the sport legal, first in Nevada and then almost everywhere.
