The USSR entered an Olympic boxing tournament for the first time in Helsinki in 1952 and became the reference in world amateur boxing within a few years. One feature of the system: professional boxing was banned there, so its best fighters could only compete as amateurs. Valeri Popenchenko, Olympic champion in Tokyo in 1964, was awarded the Val Barker Trophy for the outstanding boxer of those Games without ever having taken a paid fight. This blanket carries that team's emblem.
What the visual shows
Plain black ground. At the top, USSR in large white capitals. At the centre, a round medallion on a red ground ringed in silver, carrying a yellow five-pointed star above a yellow hammer and sickle. At the bottom, BOXING TEAM in white capitals across the full width. Three active colours: white, red, yellow.

Good to know
Wash cold with dark laundry and no fabric softener: the microfibre keeps its softness and the print its contrast. Low-heat tumble drying brings the loft back after several washes.

Frequently asked questions
What size blanket should I choose for a sofa?
150x125 cm / 59x49 in for a two-seat sofa, 200x150 cm / 79x59 in for a three-seat, 125x100 cm / 49x39 in for an armchair or a sofa back. The complete match-up is in the size guide.
Did professional boxing exist in the USSR?
No, it was banned. Soviet boxers competed only as amateurs, which explains the country's Olympic dominance from 1952 and the absence of Soviet professional world champions before the 1990s.
How do you wash a dark blanket without it bleeding?
Cold, with dark laundry, no softener and no bleach. The first two washes can release a little dye, as any new dark textile does.
Who was Valeri Popenchenko?
A Soviet boxer, Olympic middleweight champion in Tokyo in 1964, awarded the Val Barker Trophy the same year for the most stylish boxer of the tournament. He stayed an amateur his whole career.
Is the design printed on both sides?
No, on one side only. The reverse is plain and smooth, so the blanket can be turned over when you want a neutral finish on the sofa.
The same world carries on with boxing wall art and the rest of the boxing decoration.
