Winning has been making headgear in Japan since the 1930s, and the FG-2900 is its signature sparring model: the one you see in professional gyms and on the heads of world champions. This is not an impulse purchase. It is a piece of equipment you keep for years.
270 grams, and what that actually changes
A common sparring headguard weighs between 400 and 600 g / 14 and 21 oz. The FG-2900 weighs 270 g / 9.5 oz, while covering more of the face than most open models. This is not a spec sheet argument: weight carried on the head acts directly on the speed of the torso and the neck. The heavier the headgear, the more a rolling slip costs you, and the further the guard drops as the rounds go by.
Over a six round session, the difference does not show in the first round but in the last: that is where the weight decides the quality of the final three minutes.
Semi-full face: coverage without the tunnel
The FG-2900 is a face guard: its cheek protectors rise high and wrap the face, well beyond a classic open headguard, while keeping a generous central opening. That is exactly the balance sought by boxers who string rounds together: the coverage of a closed headguard with sight lines that stay readable.
The ear protectors are reinforced, the area where a poorly absorbed hook leaves the most lasting marks. The padding is triple density foam: the firmer outer layer spreads the impact surface, the inner layers dissipate the remaining energy.
Rear lace-up and chin strap
Two systems hold it in place. The rear lace-up spreads the tension over the full height of the nape, where a single hook-and-loop tab pulls on one point: that is why a Winning does not rotate, even after a clean shot. The chin strap locks the whole thing and stops it tipping backwards.
The trade-off: the lacing is set once, not between rounds. Have a partner adjust it the first time, then leave it alone.
Choosing your size
The method does not change: measure your head circumference with a tape, around 2 cm / 0.8 in above the eyebrows and across the widest point at the back of the skull. The full method sits in the size guide for the range.
One point specific to this model: Winning uses its own sizing, which does not map onto the usual European scale, and the rear lace-up gives a wider adjustment range than hook-and-loop. If your measurement puts you between two sizes, write to us before ordering: on equipment at this level, ten minutes of checking beats a return.

Worth knowing: like any headgear, the FG-2900 sharply reduces cuts and bruising but does not remove the risk of concussion. It is a training headguard: for competition, check the approval requirements of your federation. Its shell is synthetic leather, a deliberate choice by the maker for lightness, not animal hide. Finally, the wrapping cut and limited ventilation make it a warm headguard over long sessions: that is the price of the coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Winning headgear so expensive?
Japanese manufacture, careful assembly and multi-layer padding that keeps its properties far longer than a single foam. The real measure is not the purchase price but the cost in use: an FG-2900 goes through several years of daily sparring. For weekly practice, a model from the Esprit Boxe range covers the need with the same protective intent.
Is 270 g really noticeable?
Yes, and mostly in the later rounds. A common sparring headguard weighs 400 to 600 g / 14 to 21 oz: that mass carried high slows rolling slips and tires the neck. At 270 g / 9.5 oz the FG-2900 disappears after a few minutes, which explains its presence in gyms where boxers string many rounds together.
Synthetic leather on headgear at this price — is that normal?
It is a deliberate choice by the maker, not a saving. The synthetic leather used here is markedly lighter than animal hide at the same thickness, which is the very condition of the 270 g. It does not soak up sweat and cleans with a wipe, without the leather milk a real hide headguard needs.
Rear lace-up or hook-and-loop: what changes in use?
Lacing spreads the tension over the full height of the nape, where hook-and-loop pulls on a single point: the headgear does not rotate, even after a clean shot. In exchange, it is set once rather than between rounds. Have a partner adjust it the first time, then leave it alone.
Is it suitable for competition?
It is headgear made for training and sparring. Amateur competition requires headgear approved under the rules of the federation concerned, and those requirements change. Check with your commission before a show rather than relying on the model alone.
Which size if I am between two?
Write to us. Winning applies its own sizing, which does not map onto the usual European references, and the rear lace-up gives a wider adjustment range than hook-and-loop. On equipment at this level, a check before ordering beats a return afterwards.
