The ring is square, and the word comes from a circle
In the eighteenth century prize fights were held in the middle of a circle drawn on the ground or formed by the crowd: hence the word ring. It was Jack Broughton's rules, in 1743, that required a marked-out area, and then the London Prize Ring rules of 1838 that made it square and roped. The name was never corrected.
That is the scene cut into the wood: the two boxers, the ropes, and nothing else.
What the visual shows
A disc of pale wood with a slightly faceted edge. In the upper part, two boxers in profile, torsos leaning in, gloves up, cut out as negative space in the panel. Across the middle, the ring ropes shown as three horizontal lines with their posts. At the bottom, BOXING in serif capitals and, below it, a pair of gloves. The dial sits at the centre: numerals 1 to 12, red second hand.

Good to know. It needs no socket: the movement runs on a battery and there is no cable to hide. On a dark wall the pale wood cut shows at its strongest, every opening letting the wall colour through.

Frequently asked questions
What size of wall clock should I choose?
For a living space a 30 cm / 12 in dial reads comfortably at 5 to 6 metres / 16 to 20 feet. Below 25 cm / 10 in a clock becomes a desk or hallway object. Set the centre of the dial about 160 cm / 63 in off the floor, at standing eye level.
Does the clock need a battery?
Yes, the quartz movement runs on an AA battery, not supplied. It is the only power this model takes: nothing else to plug in, which leaves the choice of position free of any socket constraint.
Why is a square called a ring?
Because the earliest fights were held in a circle formed by the crowd. The area became square with the London Prize Ring rules of 1838, but the English word stayed.
Does this clock light up?
No, it is a wooden piece with no lighting electronics. For a backlit clock, the boxing gloves wall clock and the vinyl record boxing clock offer a seven-colour lit rim.
Is wood suitable for a gym?
Yes in a dry indoor space. Keep it away from a continuous source of damp; a dry microfibre cloth is all it needs.
