Wall clockLED backlight7 coloursBlack dial
The essentials: a wall clock with a black dial and a silver frame, whose central design is a boxer in guard built entirely out of words. LED backlit rim, 7 colours. €59, free shipping.
A boxer who is not drawn, but written
Every part of the body is formed by a word. MIND and CONTROL for the head and shoulders, BATTLE, HIT and ATTACK across the torso, BOOM on the red gloves, WARRIOR under the feet. Around them, eight boxer silhouettes stand in for the hour markers. At three metres / ten feet you see a guard; at one metre / three feet, you read the language of the corner.
This dial makes that its material: the boxer is not drawn, he is written.
What the visual shows
A black dial with no numerals, a circular silver frame, white hands. At the centre, a boxer in a high guard whose every body part is formed by a word: MIND and CONTROL for the head and shoulders, BATTLE, HIT, ATTACK, DEFEND and FIGHT across the torso, ENERGY, STRONG, POWER and KEEP HARD for the arms and legs. Both gloves are red and carry the word BOOM; either side of them, BANG and FAST in white. Under the feet, WARRIOR in blue.
Around the design, eight boxer silhouettes in red, blue, grey and brown stand in for the hour markers. At three metres / ten feet you read a dark boxer on a black ground; at one metre / three feet every word becomes legible.
Technical specifications
Good to know. This is a piece to be seen close up: the words only resolve at a metre / three feet. Put it in a hallway, above a desk or in a corner of the home gym where people pass, rather than high on a living room wall.

Frequently asked questions
What size of wall clock should I choose?
For a living space a 30 cm / 12 in dial reads comfortably at 5 to 6 metres / 16 to 20 feet. Below 25 cm / 10 in a clock becomes a desk or hallway object. Set the centre of the dial about 160 cm / 63 in off the floor, at standing eye level.
Does the clock need a battery?
Yes, the quartz movement runs on an AA battery, not supplied. It is separate from the lighting: a backlit clock therefore needs the battery for the hands and the mains for the light.
What does the sweet science mean?
It is the nickname given to boxing by the journalist Pierce Egan in 1813 in Boxiana: the sweet science of bruising. It has stuck as a name for the tactical side of a fight — distance, feints and rhythm.
Does the backlight change colour?
Yes, seven shades follow one another, from white to red by way of blue and green. With the light off, the clock stays a neutral black and silver piece.
Is there a model with numerals?
Yes, the boxing gloves wall clock has a white dial, numerals 1 to 12 and a 0 to 59 minute track, for reading at a distance.
