A format invented in 1948, reused as it stands
The LP was introduced by Columbia in June 1948: twelve inches across, 30 centimetres. That figure has never moved since. It is also, by useful coincidence, the standard diameter of a living room wall clock — the one that stays readable at five or six metres / sixteen to twenty feet. Vinyl is polyvinyl chloride, a rigid material that laser cuts without splitting.
These clocks reuse the record itself, with the movement set at the centre where the label used to be.
The twelve designs
The design is chosen at the order. All of them are cut out of the outer part of the record, the cut letting the wall show through or, in the LED version, the light:
- Two boxers standing either side of the dial, ring ropes across, a pair of gloves and BOXING lettering below
- Two boxers close in, seen from the waist up, ring ropes beneath them, BOXING lettering and small gloves below — cut with a polygonal outline rather than a circular one
- A ringside crowd and the line KEEP CALM AND NEVER GIVE UP
- A boxer and his glove in close-up, treated as an engraving
- A boxer in headgear above BOXING lettering underlined twice
- A boxer hitting a speed bag, gloves hanging in the foreground
- A boxer tearing through the record, BOXING lettering
- A boxer ringed with stars, gloves and a championship belt
- A boxer's torso in profile, gloves up, and the line CHAMPIONS DON'T QUIT
- Two boxers, two stars and the line BOXING CHAMPIONS
- Muhammad Ali standing over his opponent on the canvas, with his line FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE and his name
- Two boxers close in against the ropes, the woman on the left wearing a ponytail

With or without backlighting
The LED version adds a light bar behind the record: the light passes through the cut-outs and draws the design on the wall. It is controlled by remote. The version without lighting keeps exactly the same cut and the same movement, and hangs on any wall with no socket nearby.

Good to know. The version without lighting hangs anywhere, including a wall with no socket. The LED version needs power behind the record: find the nearest socket before settling on the spot. On a pale wall the light passing through the cut-outs shows far more clearly than on a dark one.

Frequently asked questions
What size of wall clock should I choose?
For a living space a 30 cm / 12 in dial reads comfortably at 5 to 6 metres / 16 to 20 feet. Below 25 cm / 10 in a clock becomes a desk or hallway object. Set the centre of the dial about 160 cm / 63 in off the floor, at standing eye level.
Does the clock need a battery?
Yes, the quartz movement runs on an AA battery, not supplied. It is separate from the lighting: a backlit clock therefore needs the battery for the hands and the mains for the light.
Is the clock made from a real vinyl record?
Yes, the base is a 30 cm / 12 in record cut by laser: the grooves stay visible in raking light. The movement takes the place of the centre label.
Does the movement make a noise?
The movement is quartz, with a second hand: the tick is that of an ordinary wall clock. For a bedroom, the wooden boxing wall clock has a solid panel that closes the sound off behind the dial.
What does float like a butterfly, sting like a bee mean?
It is the line coined by Drew Bundini Brown, Muhammad Ali's cornerman, before the Sonny Liston fight in 1964. One of the twelve designs on this clock carries it in full.
What does the LED version need?
A socket near the hanging point: the light bar plugs in behind the record. The remote supplied handles switching and colours. The AA battery for the movement is needed in both versions.
