Three and a half years without the right to fight
The gag painted on this canvas is not decoration. On 28 April 1967, Ali refused induction at the Houston draft centre. Within the hour the New York boxing commission took his licence; the other states followed. He was reigning world champion and 25 years old.
He did not box again until October 1970 — three and a half years taken out of the middle of a career, between 25 and 28, the years a heavyweight is at his peak. With no licence he made a living speaking on American campuses: he talked because he could not fight. On 28 June 1971 the Supreme Court overturned his conviction, unanimously among the eight justices who sat. A man silenced who became famous for what he said: that is the paradox the canvas puts on the wall.
What you see
Portrait format, a ground that shifts from magenta to cyan to orange. Ali is framed from the shoulders to the crown, head slightly tilted, worked in black, white and grey like a stencil, with no colour on the skin. A yellow band covers his mouth, carrying the words pop art in capitals, and ends in a closed padlock by his ear.
On the left, three dark panels stacked one above the other carry the words silence, is and golden, with his name in large letters above them. On his white vest, the word the greates in dripping letters. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a gagged face on a gradient; from 1 m / 3 ft every word can be read.

Worth knowing: the portrait is black and white and all the colour is in the ground, which is what keeps it readable at four or five metres where a busy image closes up. In a long corridor or a stairwell, allow 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in; on a clear span, 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A stencil portrait reads from a long way off
The face is flat black and white on a saturated gradient: it is the strongest contrast in the Ali family and it carries at four or five metres. In a long corridor or a stairwell 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in is enough; on a clear span, 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in lets the three panels read. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What does the gag on this canvas mean?
It refers to 28 April 1967, when Ali refused induction and lost his licence within the hour. He was kept out of the ring for three and a half years, from 25 to 28, until the Supreme Court overturned his conviction on 28 June 1971.
What words appear on the canvas?
His name in large letters, the three panels reading silence, is and golden, the words pop art on the yellow band across his mouth, and the greates in dripping letters on the vest.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is this canvas suitable for a corridor?
It is the one that suits a corridor best: the flat black and white portrait against a saturated gradient reads at four or five metres, which a detailed image does not. 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in is enough on a long wall.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
