Bernard Hart opened the first Lonsdale shop at 21 Beak Street, Soho, in 1960; the name comes from the Lonsdale Belt, created in 1909 by Hugh Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale, for the champions of Great Britain. The lion and arched lettering that came out of that house are printed full face here, in thirteen designs and four sizes.
The belt behind the lion
The Lonsdale Belt is the oldest championship belt in British professional boxing: first awarded on 8 November 1909 to Freddie Welsh, and still presented today by the British Boxing Board of Control. The brand takes its name from that trophy, and this cover takes its lion from the brand.
The thirteen designs
Each design is picked from the drop-down and has its own photograph. Two carry a flag: the Union Jack with a red lion on cream, and a heather burgundy that sets a small Union Jack under the lettering. Two work on white: navy lion with red lettering, and red lettering with blue rules and no lion. The boxing ring on black is the only one carrying a photograph; the rainbow adds the words LOVES ALL COLOURS along the bottom. Seven plain or heather grounds complete the range: navy, concrete grey, emerald green, heather orange, black with an orange logo, charcoal with an apple green lion, and a black with a yellow lion whose lettering runs from red to green.

Buying a set rather than a cushion
The thirteen designs come in the same four sizes at the same price: three 45 cm / 18 in covers in three shades cost what three identical ones cost. One rule that holds for any set — keep one ground in common, two light and one dark, and let the lion carry the link.
Which insert to buy

Good to know before ordering
This is a cover, not a cushion. The parcel holds the printed cover on its own. Inserts in 40 x 40 cm / 16 x 16 in and 45 x 45 cm / 18 x 18 in are sold in every home store for a few pounds. Our UFC belt cushion ships filled.
One design per cover. The selector does not build bundles: three designs means three covers in the basket. Shipping stays free whatever the count.
Printed on the front face. The reverse is plain, so the cover has a right side when several are lined up on one sofa.

How do I wash it without damaging the print?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F, cover turned inside out, no bleach and no tumble dryer. On the light grounds such as the Union Jack, the cold wash keeps the red sharp and the cream ground clean wash after wash.
What is the Lonsdale lion?
It is the emblem of Lonsdale London, the boxing house founded in Soho in 1960 and named after the Lonsdale Belt of 1909. The lion sits above the arched LONSDALE lettering on eleven of the thirteen designs.
