Fear is just like fire
The text painted down the right side reads: fear is just like fire. It can be helpful if you know how to use it, if not, you'll get burned. It is one of the most repeated lessons of Cus D'Amato, the trainer who took Tyson in at 13 and who Tyson quoted all his life.
D'Amato treated it as a training principle rather than a slogan. His argument was that the hero and the coward feel exactly the same thing walking to the ring, and that what separates them is what they do with the sensation. So he drilled breathing and the pre-fight routine as technical work, on the same footing as a hook. Sources differ on who first put the line in these words — it is quoted under the trainer's name and under the fighter's alike. What is settled is that it came out of the gym at Catskill.
