Why a champion gets a belt
The object Tyson wears on this canvas has a birth date: 1909, in London. The National Sporting Club commissioned a belt to be worn by the champion of each weight, at the instigation of Lord Lonsdale — which is where the name comes from. Before that, champions were given cups, trophies or money.
The original rule is still quoted: win the title three times at the same weight and the belt is yours to keep. The idea spread everywhere and every sanctioning body made its own — the green of the WBC, the black and gold of the WBA, the red of the IBF. Those gold plates and coloured leathers are what the painter put at the centre of the composition.
What you see
Portrait format. The boxer is painted from the thighs up, face on, red gloves on his hands, bare chested, black trunks carrying a shield in American colours. Three belts are arranged on him: a green one over the left shoulder, a black one with wide gold plates across the chest, and a third buckled at the waist.
The ground is worked in broad strokes of red, blue, green and magenta laid on flat, with no gradients, spilling over the shoulders and the face. The eyes stay sharp in the middle of the colour. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a boxer covered in gold; from 1 m / 3 ft each plate becomes distinct.

Worth knowing: the gold plates sit at the centre of the image, which makes this the Tyson canvas that works best beside something gold already in the room — a frame, a lamp, a trophy. From 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in the detail of the plates reads from a sofa. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
The detail is in the plates
What the painting has to offer sits in the three gold plates, worked with a knife, and they need surface. Below 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in they read as one yellow mass; from 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in the crests separate one by one. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
How many belts are on this canvas?
Three: a green one worn over the left shoulder, a black one with wide gold plates across the chest, and a third buckled at the waist. Each sanctioning body uses its own leather colour, which is how they can be told apart in the painting.
Since when have boxing champions been given a belt?
Since 1909, when the National Sporting Club in London commissioned one at the instigation of Lord Lonsdale. Before that, champions received cups, trophies or money. Win the title three times at the same weight and the original Lonsdale belt was yours to keep.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is this a painting or a photograph?
A painting, reproduced as a print: the strokes are laid on flat with no gradients and the colour runs over the shoulders and the face. It is printed on cotton canvas with pigment inks.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
