His first fight was over a pigeon
Before boxing, Tyson kept pigeons on the rooftops of Brownsville, in Brooklyn. He has told the story many times: at around ten, an older boy killed one of his birds in front of him, and he threw a punch for the first time. The pigeons never left him — he still kept several hundred at the peak of his career.
The detail matters in the way his life turned. It was a counsellor at the Johnstown juvenile centre, himself a former boxer, who spotted the teenager and drove him to Cus D'Amato's gym in Catskill. This canvas belongs to the free portrait series, where colour stands in for the document.
What you see
Portrait format, near black ground flecked with red and blue spatter. The boxer is framed from the waist up, face on, head slightly tilted, eyes lowered. The body is painted in flat areas of cyan, purple, pink and pale yellow outlined in black, with no flesh tones at all.
A red glove is raised to shoulder height on the left of the frame and a second sits lower down, the right forearm folded across the chest. Paint runs down from under the arms towards the bottom edge. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a blue torso and two red marks; from 1 m / 3 ft each flat area separates.

Worth knowing: the red gloves are the only warm area on an otherwise cold canvas, and that contrast is what carries it. It gives its best on a light wall, white or concrete, where the cyan and purple keep their full intensity. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Outlined flat colour takes small sizes
The drawing is built from wide areas closed by a black outline, so it stays legible where a photograph would lose its detail. 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in already holds an office wall, 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in a living room span. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What is the peek-a-boo guard Mike Tyson used?
Hands against the cheeks, elbows tight to the ribs, upper body folded forward: the guard Cus D'Amato developed in the 1950s. At 1.78 m / 5 ft 10 in Tyson was giving away height in every fight; the high guard protects the head while he crosses the distance with side to side movement, until he is inside. D'Amato drilled it with a rope ring hung from the ceiling that the fighter had to slip for hours.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is this canvas a photograph?
No, it is a digital painting: the body is built from flat areas of colour closed by a black outline, with no flesh tones. It is printed on cotton canvas with the same pigment inks as the photographic pieces in the collection.
What wall colour does this canvas work against?
A light wall — white, plaster or concrete — where the cyan and purple keep their intensity and the red gloves stay the warmest point in the frame.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
