The essentials: in March 1923, Arch Ward put 424 amateurs in a Chicago tournament and handed each winner a small gold glove — that is where the name Golden Gloves comes from. A glove standing on a star-comet base. At 23 cm / 9 in and 550 g / 19 oz, it has the weight in hand that separates an award from a giveaway. Four finishes, one of them red. €59, free shipping.
The gold glove of Chicago
In March 1923, Arch Ward, sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, ran an amateur tournament that drew 424 entrants. Each weight-class winner went home with a small gold glove, barely bigger than a keyring charm.
The name Golden Gloves, adopted officially in 1928, comes from that charm. A century on, the gold glove is still the most recognisable shape a boxing trophy takes.
What you get
A closed boxing glove standing thumb up, running down into a raised comet scattered with stars that meets the base. Flared hexagonal base, moulded in one piece with the trophy except in the bronze finish, where the base is black lacquer.
What the photograph will not tell you: the four finishes look nothing alike close up. Antique gold is matt and grainy, bright gold is lacquered and throws spotlight back, red is gloss with the thumb eyelet picked out in white, bronze is dark brushed. At 550 g / 19 oz it lifts with two fingers but hands over with two hands.

Buying tip: when several categories are settled on the same night, colour does the job of engraving. Red is spotted instantly on a table where everything else is gold, so keep it for the title you want to single out. All four finishes share the same 23 cm / 9 in height and line up flush.
How much a hand-over trophy should weigh
Weight registers before finish does. Under 200 g / 7 oz a resin piece feels hollow; at 550 g / 19 oz it has the density expected of an award and stands on a top table without tipping. On a shelf, the 9 × 9 cm / 3.5 × 3.5 in hexagonal base needs at least 12 cm / 5 in of depth to stay fully supported.

Frequently asked questions
How tall and how heavy is this trophy?
23 cm / 9 in tall and 550 g / 19 oz, on a hexagonal base of 9 × 9 cm / 3.5 × 3.5 in. It is handed over in person and then sits on a desk.
What finishes are available?
Four: matt antique gold, lacquered bright gold, gloss red and brushed bronze with a black base. All the same height, so they line up as a set.
Why is amateur boxing called Golden Gloves?
Because in 1923 Arch Ward gave the winners of his Chicago tournament a small gold glove the size of a charm. The name was made official in 1928.
What is it made of?
Moulded resin with a one-piece hexagonal base, lacquered black on the bronze finish. Clean with a dry microfibre cloth.
Can this trophy be engraved?
The base on this model is solid. For engraving, the 29 cm / 11.4 in bronze glove trophy carries a blank rectangular plate for that purpose.
Is shipping included?
Yes, standard shipping is free, with protective packing suited to resin. Email tracking seven days a week.
