WBO championship belt

The essentials: founded in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1988 after a split with the WBA, the WBO is the youngest of the four major bodies. Its belt carries an eagle with open wings over a blue globe, on burgundy leather. At the back, a pale fleece lining — that is what stops the belt marking bare skin when it is actually worn. Two versions at the same price: WBO standard, with smooth side discs, or WBO custom, with your photos or an engraving in both medallions. 127 cm / 50 in, about 2.7 kg / 6 lb. €159, free shipping.
San Juan, 1988
In 1988, a group of officials walked out of the World Boxing Association convention and founded the World Boxing Organization in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is the last of the four majors to appear, and its headquarters are still on the island.
The eagle on its plate comes from there: the emblem chosen at the founding, unchanged since.
The belt
Real burgundy leather with a pale edge trim. Centre plate dominated by a gold eagle with open wings, talons closed on a blue globe; across it, a red WORLD CHAMPION banner and the letters WBO. Either side, two smooth discs with gold rims, ready for an engraving or a photo.
What the front view will not show you is the inside. The back is lined with pale fleece across the whole area that touches the body, and the round WBO medallion is repeated there. That is the difference between a display belt and one that is actually carried on a shoulder for a whole evening. Laid out, it runs 127 cm / 50 in at about 2.7 kg / 6 lb.

Buying tip: if the belt is going to be worn and photographed — a title presentation, a gym shoot, a ring walk — the lining is what matters: it keeps red marks off the skin and stops the belt sliding on the shoulder. If it stays in a cabinet, the plate and the side discs are what decide.
Telling the four belts apart at a glance
Each body fixed an emblem and a colour long ago: the WBO, an eagle on burgundy; the WBC, a ring of flags on green; the WBA, a crown on navy; the IBF, twin blue globes on red. In a presentation photograph the leather colour names the title before the plate can be read at all.

Frequently asked questions
When was the WBO founded?
In 1988, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, by officials who had just left the World Boxing Association. It is the most recent of the four majors and is still headquartered on the island.
How big is the belt?
127 cm / 50 in overall and about 2.7 kg / 6 lb, the size of a belt handed over in the ring. It adjusts at the back.
Is the belt comfortable to wear?
The back section is lined with pale fleece across the whole contact area, which spreads the 2.7 kg / 6 lb over the shoulder and keeps marks off the skin.
Can the side discs be engraved?
Yes, with the WBO custom version, at the same price as the standard: both discs take three short lines of engraving or a photo, from artwork approved before production. The WBO standard version ships with smooth discs.
What does the eagle on the plate mean?
It is the World Boxing Organization emblem, used since the founding: an eagle with open wings, talons on a blue globe, under the WORLD CHAMPION banner.
Is this belt a replica?
Yes — a full-size, highly detailed replica of the WBO world championship belt: 127 cm / 50 in, about 2.7 kg / 6 lb, real 3 mm leather and brass plates in a gold finish. Unlike an official belt, it can be personalised: engraving on the discs, photos, leather colour.
