The punching bag is the centrepiece of any boxing session. It is what builds power, conditioning and range judgement — alone, with no partner and no fixed class time. Choosing one comes down to three questions: which discipline you train (hands only or hands and feet), what weight and length suit your frame, and how you are going to hang it — that last point usually decides everything.
For the full picture, our complete punching bag buying guide covers every criterion. Once you are set up, our best heavy bag workouts give you ready-made sessions by level.
🥊 The types of punching bag
Classic hanging bags. The benchmark format, 60 to 120 cm, in four coverings. The canvas bag opens the range, followed by faux leather, vintage leather and camouflage. Each comes in 60, 80, 100 and 120 cm.
Heavy bags, 150 cm and up — the club range. As soon as kicks and knees enter the work you need length and mass. The 150 cm Esprit Boxe heavy bag, the extra heavy and the 200 cm cover the full height of the body. Signature models: Twins, Fairtex, Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez.
Uppercut bags. Wider and angled, they present a horizontal face that a cylindrical bag cannot offer. From the 55 cm extra wide to the 150 cm extra long, up to the pro versions (Pro Long, Pro Wide). The uppercut ball targets the rising hook specifically.
Wall mounted bags — when the ceiling is not an option. Fixed straight to the wall, they remove the swing and free the floor. The wall bag, the current model and the vintage wall bag. Ideal for accuracy and short combinations.
Free standing, punching ball and aqua bag — no drilling. The free standing bag sits on a weighted base: no installation, and it moves. The punching ball trains timing and evasion. The aqua bag, filled with water, reproduces the density of a human body and spares the wrists.
Genuine leather and signature ranges. The genuine leather bag is the top of the range: the only material that takes a patina and lasts decades. Our house Gold, Silver and Black lines cover every height, and the target bag adds printed strike zones to guide beginners.
Custom punching bag. The custom punching bag carries your colours and your logo — club, gym or team. The artwork is approved with you before manufacture.
⚖️ What weight and size of bag?
Golden rule: a punching bag should weigh about half your body weight. A boxer of 80 to 90 kg (175-200 lb) is comfortable with a 40 to 45 kg bag. For an adult, aim for at least 30 to 35 kg on a hanging bag: below that the bag flies away on every punch and you end up training the swing rather than the technique.
| Bag weight | Typical length | Recommended profile |
|---|---|---|
| 10 – 20 kg / 22-44 lb | 60 cm | Children and young beginners |
| 20 – 30 kg / 44-66 lb | 80 to 100 cm | Teenagers and adult beginners |
| 30 – 45 kg / 66-100 lb | 100 to 120 cm | Intermediate boxers, English boxing |
| 45 – 90 kg / 100-200 lb | 150 to 200 cm | Advanced, heavyweights, kicking disciplines |
Length matters as much as weight. A 100 to 120 cm bag is enough for English boxing, where everything happens at torso and head level. As soon as you work low kicks you need to go lower: 150 cm minimum, 180 to 200 cm to cover from thigh to face.
📊 Hanging, free standing, wall mounted or water filled?
| Type | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging | The most realistic feel, 360° work | Needs a solid anchor point |
| Uppercut | Horizontal face for rising punches | A complement rather than a replacement |
| Free standing | No drilling, movable | Can slide under heavy punching |
| Wall mounted | No swing, frees the floor | Limited footwork practice |
| Aqua bag | Maximum absorption, body-like density | Water volume to manage, short format |
🧱 Canvas, faux leather, PU or genuine leather?
- Canvas: the most accessible. Perfect to start, for occasional use or to fit out a children's area.
- Faux leather and PU leather: the core of the range. Resistant to glove abrasion, easy to wipe down, indifferent to the damp of a garage or a cellar.
- Genuine leather: the cleanest strike feel and a lifespan counted in decades. The choice of clubs and of anyone buying once.
Our advice: on a bag the filling matters as much as the shell. Filling that packs down at the bottom hardens the base of the bag and hurts the wrists on low hooks — the classic fault of cheap models stuffed with loose fabric offcuts.
🛠️ Installation and mounting
- To the ceiling: you need a beam or a concrete slab, never plasterboard. Our guide to hanging a punching bag reviews every solution.
- To the wall: our wall mounts and rail systems carry heavy bags and let several bags slide along a single rail in a club.
- No drilling: a free standing frames sits on the floor and takes up to 150 kg.
- Chains and hardware: our hanging chains and hanging kits complete the installation.
- Protect the floor: under a heavy bag, mats and wall padding stop the tiles or the flooring being marked and cut the vibration passed on to neighbours.
🧼 Care and lifespan
- Wipe the covering with a barely damp cloth after sessions: sweat attacks the stitching before the material.
- On a leather bag, a nourishing balm once a year keeps it supple for years.
- Check the straps, carabiners and chains periodically: it is always the fixing that fails, never the bag.
- Redistribute the filling by shaking the bag horizontally if the base goes hard and the top soft.
- Always hit with gloves and hand wraps, never bare-handed — for your joints and for the bag.

❓ Frequently asked questions
What weight of punching bag should I choose?
About half your body weight. A 70 kg (155 lb) practitioner aims for 30 to 35 kg, a 90 kg (200 lb) frame aims for 45 kg. Below 30 kg a bag flies away on every punch and you train the swing rather than the technique. For a child, allow 10 to 20 kg on a 60 cm format.
What length of punching bag?
100 to 120 cm is enough for English boxing, where everything happens at torso and head level. As soon as you work low kicks in Muay Thai, kickboxing or MMA you need 150 cm minimum, and 180 to 200 cm to cover thigh to face. The 60 and 80 cm formats are for children and first steps.
Can a punching bag be installed in a flat?
Yes, with two precautions. On mounting, never drill into a plasterboard false ceiling: you need a concrete slab, a beam, a wall mount anchored into a load-bearing wall, or a free standing frame that touches neither wall nor ceiling. On noise, it is the vibration passed into the structure that bothers neighbours more than airborne sound: a mat or a shock-absorbing tile under the bag, a free standing model rather than a hanging one, and reasonable hours solve most of it.
Hanging or free standing: which should I pick?
Hanging gives the most realistic feel and the best value, but demands a solid anchor point. A free standing bag needs no drilling and can be moved, which makes it the answer for renters and small spaces — in exchange, lighter models slide or tip under heavy punching, so the base needs proper weighting.
What is an uppercut bag for?
For rising punches, which cannot be landed properly on a cylindrical bag. Its wide, angled shape presents a horizontal face under which the fist can travel upwards, so you can work the uppercut, the short hook and close-range exchanges. Many clubs install one alongside a classic bag rather than instead of it.
What is an aqua bag, and who is it for?
A bag filled with water rather than textile stuffing. Water shifts on impact and absorbs energy better than any padding, while reproducing the density of a human body. It is the choice of heavy hitters and of anyone with sensitive wrists or shoulders.
Canvas, faux leather or genuine leather: which covering?
Canvas suits beginners and occasional use. Faux leather and PU leather resist abrasion and damp better, in a garage or a cellar: the best compromise for regular practice. Genuine leather gives the cleanest feel and lasts decades.
How do I hang a punching bag?
Three solutions depending on your home: direct anchoring into a concrete slab or a beam, a wall mount fixed into a load-bearing wall, or a free standing frame that needs no drilling at all. A plasterboard false ceiling will never hold a 30 kg bag in motion.
Do I have to wear gloves?
Yes. Punching bare-handed damages your joints and wears the covering prematurely. Use bag gloves or training gloves, always over hand wraps, which hold the wrist and absorb sweat.
Can a punching bag be customised?
Yes. Our custom punching bag carries your colours and your logo, for a club, a gym or a team. The artwork is approved with you before manufacture. Write to info@esprit-boxe.com for a quote.
How do I look after a punching bag?
Wipe the covering after sessions with a barely damp cloth: sweat attacks the stitching before the material. Feed leather once a year with a suitable balm. And above all, check the straps, carabiners and chains regularly: it is always the fixing that fails, never the bag.
